American indie-rock band Modest Mouse and alternative London-based Wolf Alice has been added to the line-up of this year’s Calling Festival. It is the second time the festival will be held on Clapham Common and other acts already include Ryan Adams and the Shining, Echo and the Bunnymen and The Hives.
Headlining the festival are Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Bird’s who released their new record Chasing Yesterday earlier this month. The album instantly reached the top of the Official Albums Chart. The former Oasis member is currently touring the world, making a stopover on Clapham Common on July 4th before wrapping it up at Latitude Festival later that month.
Calling Festival, which was known as Hard Rock Calling and Hyde Park Calling because of its location up until 2013, have hosted some of the rock world’s most prominent names. Bands such as Soundgarden, Pearl Jam and Bruce Springsteen can be found in the line-up over the last 10 years. Clapham Common saw an impressive Calling last summer with acts like Aerosmith and Stevie Wonder.
This year south London will see the anticipated return of Modest Mouse who has been around for more than 20 years but only recently released Strangers to Ourselves; their first album in almost a decade. Up-and-coming Wolf Alice is one of the lesser-known bands on the program this summer. The Ellie Rowsell-fronted band is releasing its debut album in three months but already played a set at renowned Glastonbury festival last year.
Fans of 80’s cult-band The Smiths might get lucky if former guitarist Johnny Marr decides to follow his friends along to the festival. Marr was both part of Modest Mouse for three years and featured on the Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Bird’s new song Ballad of the Mighty I so it is safe to say that we soon will start hearing speculations about a surprise appearance in Clapham.
