Tucked away from the hustle and bustle of London Bridge lies Borough Market, presenting food from all over the globe waiting to be found by passers-by and adventurous business men and women working in the area.
Nana Fannys, a small stall with no shortage of people was completely bombarded by hungry customers and interested onlookers, so naturally we had to grab a piece of the action and see what the fuss was about. A family run business first set up in 1944, it offers a speciality of a Salted Beef Bagel for £5, or alternatively Salted Beef in Rye Bread for £5.95, melted cheese can be added for the extra cost of £1. Stuffed with pickles, slaw and mustard this speciality dish certainly lived up to our expectations – and went beyond. The spice of the mustard does not overpower the succulent beef and offers great value for money for such a wealthy area. Throughout the day a constant crowd was situated around the stall so it’s not hard to miss. The stall is situated in Borough Market Mondays – Saturdays.
Venturing deeper into the market we found ourselves at The Veggie Table, a predominately vegetarian stall featuring vegan options. £5 gets you a Sweet Potato Chickpea Burger, a vegan, lactose and wheat-free speciality from the stall. The burger was filled with cashews, spices and slaw and offered a choice between homemade salsa and caramelised onions to add your own personal flavour to the dish. A combination of sweet and tangy flavours meets your mouth and the unexpected kick of spice in the dish really keeps you on your toes. Add a box of salad into the mix for an extra £3 and you’ll be sorted for the day. The stall also offers a Halloumi Burger made with halloumi, carrots and beetroot and is flavoured with herbs and paprika. Impossible to finish and impossible to forget – we know we will be back here soon.
Now for something sweet – a quick loop round the market finds us at Comptoir Gourmand and we are spoilt for choice. From macaroons to brownies to gingerbread and cheesecake – it’s probably the toughest decision we’ve had to make all day. A ‘rich and gooey’ chocolate brownie priced at £2.20 was my first choice – and they weren’t lying; it was rich. Finding myself three bites in and unable to eat anymore isn’t what I was expecting, nevertheless the flavours complimented each other, but it was nothing special.
Moving on to a meringue the size of my head and again – I found myself struggling to eat more than a few bites. With such a gooey interior it was not what I expected. Although it’s hard to go wrong with sugar and egg whites; they somehow did. Perhaps I just found the stall on a bad day; but I’ll leave that up to you to discover.
Borough market has so much to offer with countless stalls and an eclectic mix of culture, food and people; you won’t want to miss out on it.
