A cedar tree as a memorial to Jody Debrowski will be planted next to the bandstand

A local LGBTQ+ group have raised double their intended goal to commemorate an attack on an individual

Wandsworth LGBTQ+ have started an online crowd funder to raise £425 but collected £820.

The money raised will go to planting a tree in Clapham Common on December 10 2018 at 10:50

The organisation and The Friends of Clapham Common will plant a cedar tree next to the bandstand in Clapham Common to remember Jody Debrowski

Debrowski, 24, from Stroud, Gloucestershire was murdered in Clapham Common on October 15 2005, dying from extensive injuries including; a broken nose, brain swelling and extensive bruising to neck and groin areas.

He was attacked due to his attackers believing he was homosexual.

Debrowski’s parents were originally unable to visually identify his body and were forced to identify him through his fingerprints

It became a landmark case, using detail sections of the criminal justice act 2003 to trail and arrest the men who murdered Debrowski.

His story was documented by the Channel 4 Tv drama Clapham Junction in 2007.

Along with the tree, the organisation will erect an A1-size graphic to indicate the tree and the name.

Chair of WandsworthLGBTQ+, David Robson, said: “We don’t want this opportunity to pass us by and asking the community to donate what they can so we can give Jody this final tribute”.

Jody’s mum, Sheri has said that any remaining funds from the campaign will be donated to the WandsworthLGBTQ+ Forum
