Londoners say it’s not ‘un-British’ to be pro-Gaza

Londoners hanging their British flag out to show a sign of resistance against Keir Starmer Statement.

After Prime Minister Keir Starmer sparked debate by calling planned pro-Palestinian protests against the two-year Gaza war “un-British”, SouthLondonLines took to the streets of Lewisham to ask people what they thought.

Rodrigo, 23, a retail associate, said that he agreed with Starmer. Most “British people don’t care about what is going on in Palestine,” he said.

He added, “only British nationals from immigrant backgrounds are concerned with what’s going on and are joining in with the protests.”

Labiqa, 17, a Lewisham College student, said Starmer’s comment didn’t “make sense”. After all, she reasoned, “we are uniting against something so horrible”. Referring to the mid-September Unite the Kingdom march in central London organised by far right activist Tommy Robinson, she said that it was “just one big hate march. Is that representing British values?”

Fia, 22, a consultant, said that Starmer’s comment “uses a narrow-minded definition of the word British”. She added, “Starmer views Britain and British values” in a very “confined and ignorant” sense and that “he’s sending the wrong message as the leader of our nation”.
