Greenwich residents and visitors only have days left to enjoy the town centre in its magical pink and green as part of GreenWitch transformation.

Last Tuesday, the Greenwich Council agreed to allow the borough to officially be renamed “GreenWitch” for two weeks ahead of Wicked movie premiere.

The promotional changes will not affect areas outside Greenwich town centre, and will run until November 24.

The Wicked takeover is set to fund Greenwich’s Sparkle in the Park winter festival later this month, which the Greenwich Council estimated to cost £190,000.

Jit Ranhabat, Greenwich’s mayor, announced the name change on Tuesday morning, unveiling a plaque at the Greenwich Foot Tunnel.

Wicked, a stage-to-film adaptation starring Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo, is the “untold story” of the witches from the classic movie Wizard of Oz.

Locations all across Greenwich’s town centre have been converted to a magical pink and green colour scheme, following that of the two main characters in the film.

The University of Greenwich also partnered with Universal Pictures to bring Shiz University, the school from the musical to life.

Visitors can follow a “GreenWitch” trail, beginning at the tourist information centre and taking sight-seers to some of Greenwich’s most famous sights, from the “GreenWitch” High Road to “GreenWitch” Market.

The council will not disclose how much Universal Pictures paid them for the ‘Wicked’ takeover, but all the funds will go towards the Sparkle in the Park festival in Charlton Park, running from November 28 to December 1.

Universal Pictures has been approached for comments.
