Motorcyclist killed and two injured New Kent Road crash

A 22-year-old male motorcyclist has been killed and two people injured in the collision between a motorcycle and a van on a major south London road last week.

Police have confirmed the collision happened at 4:23 pm on 23 November at the junction with Balfour Street.

After the crash, emergency services raced to the scene of the smash in New Kent Road shortly before 4:30 pm, but the young man was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics at about 5 pm. The motorcycle was carrying a pillion passenger who was taken to hospital where he remained in a stable condition. And a pedestrian also suffered a minor leg injury and was taken to a south London hospital.

James Martin, an eyewitness who was at the scene at 4:30 pm yesterday, told the News: “There was a van in the middle of the road and a man on the floor next to a postbox. People had gathered around him but he appeared lifeless. One other person was receiving CPR and the other was conscious but laid on the ground holding the hands of members of the public.”

New Kent Road was soon shut in both directions from Elephant and Castle after the crash at Balfour Street. This led to a moment of panic and traffic delay in this area. TfL said that buses were delayed by up to 90 minutes as diversions were put in place and traffic built in the surrounding area. But this area will reopen and begin to normalise at about 1 am today.

An investigation is underway. Police are appealing for witnesses following a fatal collision in Southwark. Any witnesses are asked to contact officers via 101.
