Cressingham Gardens residents panic over their future

Despite the Lambeth council promises of refurbishment, now, every hope has been crushed: the residents of Cressingham Gardens estate will lose their home this year.

In 2012, the Lambeth Council announced a variety of 5 different options in order to improve the conditions of living on the Cressigham Gardens estate. Today, only two of these options have been successful, retaining and promoting the idea of part / entire regeneration rather than refurbishment.

Today the plan became one of regeneration, making the Cressingham Gardens residents’ future from uncertain, to worse. Angela, mother of three, says “I am scared for my family and what will come with this new plan. We need the whole community to step up you know, we need help, and it’s urgent.”

Residents expressed their voices on website Brixton Buzz, saying that the council “never had any intention of refurbishing” their homes and taking this decision is only encouraging the gentrification that has been happening in the area for several years now. David, a 54 year old landlord of Cressingham Gardens, “the council is only trying to find a way to kick us out of our own home. Landlords have not been written to or notified by the Council, it’s ridiculous.”

The Cressingham Gardens estate has been build “more than 40 years ago” says Maria, 54 year old security agent at the Lambeth Housing Council, “their voices have to be heard, and Brixton’s community has to stand up and help them keep what is theirs.”

Amongst all the support and solidarity that has been showed over the last three years, a demonstration will be taking place on Monday 9 March at the Lambeth Town Hall at 7 pm. Anyone interested in helping and showing their support to the community are welcome to.
