Borough Market opens space for new traders

London’s famous Borough Market has disclosed plans to create selling opportunities for fresh, new traders to experience business in the capital.

The new initiative, entitled ‘Pitch ups’, will allow potential traders, such as small start-ups and London-based producers to take up spaces in the market hall site on a one to two day rotational basis. The idea behind this venture is to allow smaller businesses the chance to build customer followings without the worries of additional costs as results of employing extra staff and providing larger quantities of produce. Whilst taking up space in one of London’s largest and oldest markets, new traders will be able to gain valuable understanding of what it takes to run their businesses on a much more regular basis.

With 115 traders currently based at the market, potential traders will go through a rigorous application process which includes meeting with expert chefs who will test their produce for quality and sustainability. However, for those successful applicants who’s businesses appear to grow sufficiently as a result of this initiative, there is potential for them to apply for permanent trader positions in the nearby future.

Even for those who’s time at the market is perhaps short-lived, the chance to get their business name known and learn vital lessons of the trade from their peers seems one that has been a long time coming.
