PM Starmer’s Protest warning met with backlash from the public

Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s recent statement urging students not to participate in pro-Palestinian protests has sparked criticism from members of the public, with many accusing the government of suppressing free speech. In a series of street interviews, individuals from different backgrounds voice their opinion over the Prime Minister’s remarks.

“I disagree,” said Roland, a 30-year-old artist from the United States. “The government trying to suppress the voices of young people isn’t surprising. Protesters are clearly distinguishing between anti-Semitism and being pro-Palestinian. It’s a weapon of silence.”

Another interviewee, who refused to give their name and described themselves as unemployed, said Starmer’s comments reflect political manipulation. “It’s controlism either way,” they said. “Politics are politricks.”

Rhea Saxenas, an 18-year-old full-time student, also pushed back. “Students should be allowed to do what they want. We live in a free speech world,” she said. “He’s just trying to twist it to what he wants the public to believe.”

Starmer’s remarks have created rising tensions specifically on university campuses, where students have staged protests and sit-ins in solidarity with Palestinians. While the government encourage that these gatherings risk fueling ‘antisemitism’, many participants argue their message is one of human rights, not hate.
