A hotel night porter was tortured by two thieves who were trying to break into a safe in a Lewisham hotel.

Frank Stuart, 51, was attacked after the intruders broke into Jury’s Hotel in Lewisham Way in the early hours of the morning.

When Stuart refused to give them the keys to the safe the one of the men hit him with a hammer whilst the other knifed his face and hands and then tied up his hands, feet and mouth.

Stuart needed 35 stitches to his face and hands and will remain in Whittington Hospital in North London for a further week.

Hotel manager, Jeremy Bates, said Stuart was a “hero” while Stuart’s wife, Maureen, 53, said: The injuries were “painful” and was the attack was “cruel” as the men “got away with practically nothing.”

The attackers were identified as being white and local. One of them is 5ft 11in tall, in his early 20s and has dark short hair, while the other man is said to be 30 years old, 5ft 4in tall, of a thin build and has long brown hair.

Detective Inspector, James Dallowey, said: “These men are particularly vicious” and appealed for any information about the men.
