A new printed Camberwell local newspaper that will be published six times a year is about to release its first issue this February.

The Camberwell Clarion (TCC) aims to give Camberwell local people a voice and a platform to tell their stories or to hold the local council into account while supporting local businesses, community groups and events. People can also keep up to date with daily Camberwell local news and other stories online through their social media.

TCC is the fourth project of The Peckham Peculiar which was founded by two local journalists who have lived in south-east London for a combined total of 28 years and has created three south London newspapers — The Peckham Peculiar in 2013, The Dulwich Diverter in 2016 and The Lewisham Ledger in 2018. All of them are based on the concept they wrote on their website: “Our pages will be filled with grassroots, on-the-ground reporting and unique stories and interviews that are 100 per cent about the local area and its people, rather than generic content driven by press releases.”

TCC received £7,547 funds in total from 165 backers, either are interested individuals or local businesses, during the funding period of 60 days from September 27 to November 26, extensively exceeding the original goal of £5000, which would cover the cost of the first two issues. The surplus funds will be used on producing future editions and keeping the project alive throughout 2022, according to their announcement.

TCC will be finalising the design, photography and copy, and will begin to lay out the paper in January. In February, they will send the paper to print and launch later this month. Then, they will distribute the newspaper across the whole of the local area.
