Plans have been announced to increase the number of homes at Clapham Park from 2,443 to approximately 3,350. The redevelopment of the estate is hoped to provide new and refurbished homes to tenants and buyers.

“At a time of chronic housing shortage, we can deliver new, more affordable homes,” said a spokesperson from Metropolitan. The projected increase is reportedly a response to the increased property prices in Clapham.

Metropolitan aims to make at least 50% of the new properties affordable to regular buyers, but is yet to announce a price for the new properties.

“The project is due to finish in 2025, but all secure tenants will be living in a refurbished or brand new home by 2024,” said Metropolitan.

Metropolitan had initially planned to develop 2,443 homes in 2012, but the project was halted after it failed to secure investor interest. The project was readopted in 2013 after it received a loan of £117 million from Lloyds Bank and Barclays.

Even though the number of homes being built rather than refurbished has increased, there are reportedly still wishes to protect the amount of public space available in Clapham. “We are aiming to provide 4.18 hectares of high-quality, open public space.”

Construction of the new properties is hoped to start by early 2017, but the company is still in the process of consulting local residents, with Metropolitan stating that “We want to make sure it still delivers what the local community needs today and in the future.”
