Busy month at The Bread & Roses Theatre

After its launch last November, there has been a buzzing activity at The Bread & Roses Theatre.

The theatre stage with 54 available seats is located above the Bread & Roses pub at 68 Clapham Manor Street.

While the in-house company, Bread & Roses Theatre Company, is rehearsing for their first full-length production, premiering in April, there are a lot to look forward to at the intimate theatre stage during March.

March started off with an opera double bill presented by Secret Opera and New London Opera players: two versions of Verdi’s iconic opera “La Traviata & The Trousered Traviata”. “The Trousered Traviata” portrays the sexual themes and lesbian culture in Paris from the late Nineteenth century until World War II. “La Traviata” is one of the world’s most performed operas.

“Muscavado”, a new play by Matilda Ibini, is premiering this Tuesday. The play is about slavery in Barbados during the Nineteenth Century and is expected great reception from the audience based on the thrilling reviews previously received. The final show will run on Saturday 14 March.

Halfway through the month another opera double bill will take place on stage: Mozart’s comedy opera “Bastien and Bastienne” and Holst’s mysterious “Savitri”. Premiering Sunday 15, ending Tuesday 17 March.

From Thursday 19 till Saturday 21 March a contemporary and relevant play will run at the Bread & Roses Theatre. “#theorder” is set in a post-apocalyptic world after an ultimate command has been issued by Facebook. According to the theatre, this play will change the way you use social media.

March at Bread & Roses will also be spiced up with a little Shakespeare towards the end of the month. “Can you truly be yourself stuck in religious conventions?” the theatre asks. “Measure for Measure” and “Merchant of Venice” will run from Tuesday 24 till Sunday 29 March.

In addition to these productions, Bread & Roses has planned for some exclusive “One-Night-Only’s”.

A “Vagabond Stage” reading and exploration of Gammer Gurton’s Needle by John Still will run on Sunday 8 March.

The following day “Ad Liberation”, a new play written by David Ralf”, will run as a rehearsed reading from Mingled Yarn Theatre.

The last One-Night-Only of the month, “Short(s) Wave”, will take place on Sunday 22 March and is a series of short plays produced by seven members of the “Royal Court’s spring 2014 writing programme”.

“We’ve got an exciting March coming up,” said The Bread & Roses Theatre in a press release earlier this month.
