Camberwell Art Market: an original source for Holiday gifts

Over 40 local artists and artisans exhibited their creative works at the Camberwell Art Market.

Saturday 30th of November, in four different locations across Camberwell (all within 200m), local artists and artisans were able to promote their craft to the public. Families and couples were able to enjoy original creations from their fellow neighbours from 12 pm this Saturday.

This market has been organised several times every year for the past 25 years.

The Art Market will run those two first weekends of December across the Butterfly Walk, The Tiger Pub on Camberwell Green, The Joiners Arms Pub and the Church Street Hotel.

This art market is an opportunity for local creators to shine a light on their art.

Debby Allen, one of the organisers of the market, told SLL that “It is important it is for locals to know their area is a creative and artistic hub”.

For Georgina Joel, 52, founder of No Shrinking Violet, a jewellery brand, it is the occasion to put promote the products she started making professionally last January.

For Cheryl Richards, 47, designer and creator of Colourful Creation Homeware Design, it is an opportunity to help to get the message out that “you can have beautiful houseware from natural materials. Sustainable homeware for modern-day living”. She works with Vietnamese artisans who help her create what she designs.

For Jaylee Alee, 26, working in the family business, Saboon Alee, it is a tradition to come to the Camberwell Art Market. They have been selling their locally handmade soaps at the market for years.

For Fabio Coelho, 30, creator of Pindo Rama, apparel and design brand from Brazil, it is the opportunity to introduce locals to the work of local artists and by buying their art to support it.

John Adams, 33, a cab driver who just moved to Camberwell said “I saw the posters advertising it (the market) in the street but never would have thought it would be such a great opportunity to do my Christmas shopping”

Rhonda Perez, 38, florist, has been living in the area for over 15 years. “I’ve been coming to the market every year since Eitan my oldest son was born. It is amazing to see the new creations every year, but also to see the same faces and have a nice chat”.

Patrick Hopkins, 78, retired, who has lived between Peckham and Camberwell his whole life told SLL that “For the past 25 years, I have been shopping for original gifts at the art market. I’m certain that no one already has what I’m buying them and I’m supporting local artists. It’s win-win.”

To Debby, 67, member of the organising committee of the art market, it is capital to understand the dynamics of Camberwell to see products and artwork created in the area. It helps people realise how diverse and productive their area is.

The coming of the holiday season is the perfect time for these kinds of events, said Debby, as people are looking for a gift for their loved one, local art is a great option.
