Camberwell Arts Open Studios returns this December

Christmas is fast approaching and its almost time to find presents for your loved ones. If you want something more artsy and original, Camberwell is definitely the place to go.

For the sixth time since 2014, over 125 Camberwell artists, makers and creators will open their doors to art lovers everywhere. Everything you can imagine will be on show: jewellery, paintings, textiles, fashion, photography, ceramics, homewears, accessories and more.

Camberwell Arts is a registered charity founded 21 years ago by Selina Hamilton and a group of local residents and artists, as they sought to highlight the diversity of the local arts scene, establishing an annual arts week and an open studio programme.

The organisation also aims to encourage residents to engage with their environment, using contemporary art practice as a means to promote and improve social, community and cultural resources: drawing from performance, cinema, music spoken word and literature to complement the central focus on the visual arts.

This event celebrates the area’s creative talent (and Christmas) by asking local galleries and artists to reveal their workspaces once again.

Weekend 1 (SAT 3 – SUN 4) will be held in studios of South Camberwell:

  • Vanguard Court, home to a buzzing, creative, and collegiate community of like-minded creative makers, which has gained an enviable reputation over the last thirty years as a unique creative community.
  • Vicarage Grove, a terraced house off Camberwell Church Street, where an eclectic handful of artists sell their abstract photography and painting, surrealist imbued illustration, traditional portraiture and fine bone china for the 21st Century.

Weekend 2 (FRI 9 -SUN 11)  will be held in studios of South Camberwell:

  • Artichoke Printmaking, one of the UKs leading professional fine art print workshops – making, selling, publishing and exhibiting etchings, lithographs and block prints. Their reputation for exhibiting the best of contemporary print works by up and coming, as well as, established printmakers is internationally recognised.
  • Warrior Studios, a loose and diverse collective, developing exhibitions together and shaing knowledge and skills freely with each other.
  • Whirled Studios, set out to create affordable artist and workshop space.
  • Coldharbour Studios, home to over 30 established artists, designers, photographers and other creative people.
  • Clockwork Studios, a thriving community of artists and makers.
  • Empress Mews, where visitors are able to enjoy the tranquil courtyard setting and the friendly collaboration amongst the exhibitors.
  • Remakery, a co-operative workshop space that diverts valuable waste materials away from landfill and supports our local community in increasing their skills, confidence and employment opportunities. It provides workspace and access to materials and tools, so remakers – local residents, makers, artists and businesses – then use them to create products, art and enterprises. Any profit is recycled to subsidise Remakery membership and social programmes for those at a disadvantage in our community.

As stated on the official website, they are “promoting the arts in Camberwell and Camberwell through the arts”.
