Camberwell murder: man knifed to death outside St Giles Church

2-stabbing-camberwellMohammad Kakay, 33 was stabbed repeatedly outside St Giles Church when a row broke out on Saturday November 19.

Kakay suffered serious injuries to his heart and liver, and was pronounced dead at King’s College Hospital several hours after the 9am brawl.

The father of three staggered along a pathway behind the churchyard on Camberwell Church Street, before collapsing near Wilson Road.

Passers-by stopped and tried to revive Kakay, resident of Bromley, until emergency services arrived.

There are “unconfirmed reports it could be related to an earlier fight in the Nags Head” said Camberwell Online. A murder investigation has been launched as police desperately appeal for witnesses.

Detective chief inspector Lee Watling said: “We understand that the grounds and footpaths around St Giles Church are popular in the local area with dog walkers, and by people using them as a ‘cut through’.

“so we are appealing to anyone who was in or around the area of the church at around 9am on Saturday morning”.

Mohammed Kakay moved from Birmingham, where he raised three children, to Bromley last year to work as a hotel porter in central London. He previously moved to the UK from Sierra Leone during the Civil War in 1999 to claim asylum and start a family.

His brother Joe Thomas said: “He was the best father any boy could hope to have. There is no reason why anyone would want to hurt him”.

The death of Mohammed Kakay is Camberwell’s fourth homicide this month.
