Cyclists in London Bridge set to outnumber motorists by 2025

Cycle traffic in London Bridge area will double by 2025

All streets in the London Bridge area set to carry more cycle traffic than motor traffic by 2025 due to a new cycle scheme.

The London Bridge area is one of the most polluted areas in the city and with the threat of climate change being at the forefront of most people’s attention in recent weeks, Team London Bridge have announced their plans for a new climate-friendly cycling strategy.

Team London Bridge, the company responsible for making changes and improving the London bridge area, announced on November 15 that the strategy would reduce dangerous nitrogen dioxide levels caused by high levels of traffic.

The London Bridge area significantly exceeds EU limits on nitrogen dioxide levels which is a major cause of concern for the environment.

Team London Bridge say that “a better cycling network will enable the area to become quieter, greener, safer, less polluted, more welcoming, more inclusive, more efficient and better connected”.

Nadia Broccardo, Team London Bridge Chief Executive Officer, said: “There is a great appetite here to make cycling in London Bridge a much more attractive and practical option than it is today.

“But this strategy is as much about people and places as it is about cyclists, and the projects identified on our Action Plan will bring benefit to local businesses and the area as a whole.”

The cycle strategy aims to increase journeys taken by bicycle by 50% before 2025 in order to reduce pollution levels.

The company stated that the plan would put “cycling at the heart of the ongoing transformation of London Bridge into a globally significant place of modern commerce, enterprise and creativity”.

A high number of collisions

Another target set out by team London bridge is the desire to double the number of cycled commuter trips taken by women, BAME groups and disabled people by 2025.

In order to achieve such goals, team London Bridge will introduce measures such as extending cycle superhighway 4 through the London bridge area which is set to create a continuous and safe cycle route between London Bridge and Greenwich.

The area would also see an increase in cycle parking and storage for cycle users.

Another huge benefit of the cycle strategy is that it would have major safety benefits for cyclists. In the present, the infrastructure of the London bridge area is uninviting to cyclists as it has been maximised to allow high numbers of traffic into the area.

This means that London Bridge suffers from a high number of collisions involving cyclists and the area is generally unsafe.

The scheme aims to reduce these numbers by creating new cycle ways that will allow cyclists to travel in traffic-free areas.

The scheme has been well received within the local area.

Joyce Wilson of Anthony Gold Solicitors, a local business, was quoted as saying: “The business community in London Bridge is keen to champion cycling as it supports many of their own objectives of increasing health and wellbeing for staff and promoting sustainable practices.

“We also recognise the positive impact that prioritising cycling can have on a place, making it calmer, cleaner, and quieter.”
