Heroic porter tortured during hotel burglary in Lewisham

A heroic night porter was tortured by two burglars trying to locate the hotel’s safe keys in the early hours of this morning in Lewisham.

Two men broke into Jury’s Hotel, on Lewisham Way this morning at 3.30am. Frank Stuart a 51 year old night porter was subjected to what police describe as “torture”. He was attacked with both a hammer and a knife, as the two men attempted to find the keys to the hotel’s safe. They left with only £15, stolen from a fruit machine.

Stuart is now in a satisfactory condition at Whittington Hospital, North London, and after having 35 stitches to numerous wounds, he is expected to be in hospital for a week.

Detective Inspector James Dallowey, said: “These men are particularly vicious, we are keen to catch them”.

Jeremy Bates, hotel manager said: “We think Frank is a Hero he knew exactly where the keys were, but he was determined not to give them up”. The hotel have offered a reward of £500.

Stuart’s wife Maureen said: “The worse they got the more determined Frank was to not let them get away with it, he is very brave.”

Police are appealing for information.
