Lambeth Council, in partnership with Muse Developments, are set to build a new central Brixton campus. Lambeth Council have stated that the project is expected to take “between 3-5 years”.

The Your New Town Hall plans include a preservation of the Town Hall, office space, a civic building, and a 14-story block of flats.

Sarah Miller, 40, a Brixton resident says, “I’m glad for the refurbishment, the flats are an eyesore and Brixton needs brightening up.”

Hambrook House, Olive Morris House, and 1-7 Town Hall Parade are set to be demolished to make way for the new high-rise structure, a Lambeth Council Source has stated.

Iain Morgan, 55, a resident of Hambrook House, says, “They say they’ll move me [to a new property], but I’ve lived here 30 years, I still don’t know when or where I’ll end up [moving to a new property].”

The demolishment excludes Electric Brixton, which is a council listed building.

Although there is no confirmed demolition date, according to Lambeth Council these will take place between 2015 and 2018.

The redevelopment of Town Hall Parade requires the purchasing of the Fridge Bar, which recently underwent a £150,000 refurbishment.

Lambeth Council is preparing a Compulsory Purchase Order to acquire the property, but they must demonstrate a “compelling case in the public interest”.

Compensation in such instances includes property value, costs of acquiring and moving to a new venue, as well as additional payments.

Lambeth Council have refused to comment on how much the purchase will cost as they are “currently in negotiations”.

Lambeth Council Cabinet Member for Finance, Paul McGone, has released a statement promising that “Lambeth New Town Hall is not being built on £50m of borrowed money”.

McGone went on to state that the refurbishment would only help savings after the Government cut 50% of the council’s budget.

According to Lambeth Council, Your New Town Hall is expected to save at least £4.5m per year, along with creating new jobs.

The public and residents are encouraged to leave feedback through drop-in sessions, workshops and online via www.yournewtownhall.org.

Details of drop-in sessions and workshops can be found in the Lambeth Town Hall.
