Young book lovers can meet some big names at free book fair

Young book lovers can meet the renowned illustrators and authors of new books like I Am The Seed That Grew The Tree and Worm & the Bird at a free event at South London Gallery’s Children’s Book Fair in Camberwell this November.

South London Gallery will host several illustrators and writers on the weekend of the 17thand 18th , such as:

  • Yuval Zommer, talk and workshop
  • Frann Preston-Gannon, talk and workshop
  • Coralie Bickford-Smith, book signing
  • Katie Viggers, workshop and book signing

In past years, South London Gallery has even hosted big names like Angela Ruskin.

Jack Hearne, the retail manager at South London Gallery organised the event.

He said as a parent he believed events like these should be “high on the priority list” of the gallery as a museum for the community.

Hearne, 30, said: “We realised that the more children’s books we were ordering in, the more families we would bring into the gallery.”

He continued, saying that “it would be great if people knew there was this great free resource on their doorstep”. He understands that “art can be quite intimidating” especially in an “big old building” and that young people might be discouraged because of this.

This event began in 2015 to give literary resources for free to the community.

When asked about why he thinks it should be free, Hearne replied: “It’s right at the core of what we want to do in reaching out to the community and we wouldn’t want to charge for that.”

The gallery will also be selling some of their books including the Big Book of the Blue (award winning illustrator Yuval Zommer) and author of A Book of Bears (Kate Viggers).
