A Camberwell preacher loses appeal over COVID fraud conviction.

Bishop Climate Wiseman was earlier this year found guilty of fraud after selling bogus cures for COVID-19 to his many followers in the form of “plague protection oil”.

Wiseman told his followers that they may “end up dropping dead” during the COVID-19 pandemic if they did not purchase his £91 “plague protection oil”.

In February Wiseman was sentenced at Inner London crown court to one year in jail, suspended for 2 years, and 130 hours of unpaid community service. Wiseman was also told to pay a total of £60,672.

Wiseman, the head of the Kingdom church in Camberwell, South London took his case to the court of appeals earlier last month.

In a written ruling, the court said it was “not persuaded that the conviction was unsafe” and that “It is not arguable that there was any procedural unfairness or that the costs order was manifestly excessive”.

Wiseman informed the court that he had received divine inspiration, claiming to be a prophet with the ability to cure coronavirus, as communicated to him during a visitation from God.

10 members of his congregation, including nurses, attested that they either experienced healing or were protected from contracting COVID-19 by using the oil through methods such as steam inhalation or topical application.

He sold a mixture of olive oil, cedar wood, and hyssop for £91 on its own, under the names “divine protection oil” and “plague protection oil”, or as part of a “divine plague protection kit”, containing a card and scarlet yarn.

Wiseman also offered a range of other products including an oil to help in court cases.

In 2016 Wiseman and his church were investigated for a similar matter by trading standards in relation to the sale of oils said to cure cancer but did not lead to a prosecution as the oil was pulled from his church soon after.
