Photofusion Photography Centre – The Home of London’s Contemporary Photography

Founded in 1979 in south London, Photofusion has cemented itself a significant place in the London photography scene, now boasting to be “London’s largest independent photography resource centre”.

Located above a healthy eats fast food shop, Photofusion sits over the renowned Brixton Village market, after moving the organisation from it’s original location in Wandsworth in 1991. Whilst the entrance is hard to spot, Photofusion’s presence is indisputable, thanks to the large sign hanging over a standard door with a small plaque that reads “Press button for Photofusion”.

Offering a wide range of services such as dark rooms, a photographic studio, digital suites among other things, Photofusion is a home for the photographers of London. The space not only offers these services for the photographers themselves, but also an exhibition space that showcases work from members and others.

Photofusion’s exhibition also welcomes recent graduates, for instance it’s currently showcasing the work of Chelsea College of Art graduate, Jon Baker. Photofusion has provided Baker the space to hold his first solo exhibition. Whilst the overall exhibition shows Baker’s fine abilities in manipulating objects through photography and cross processing techniques, the greatest thing to take out of Photofusion’s exhibition space is the feeling of camaraderie between photographers.

Whilst the photographic utilities aren’t open to the general public, membership at Photofusion is the modest price of £50 per year or £25 if you are a student. Membership with Photofusion entitles you to access to all parts of the resource centre and also the chance to attend exclusive members events.

Typically holding eight exhibitions per year and often holding talks for members of the public, it’s a must-see for anyone visiting Brixton. The exhibitions are usually free and offer a great look into London’s latest photography.
