Local community centre in danger of demolition

Proposals to bulldoze Brixton Recreation Centre were discussed on Wednesday, following the Lambeth Conservatives’ proposal to save £1 million on the activity centre in the heart of Brixton and build a sports centre in the place of Pop Brixton.

Plans are to save a minimum £1 million from building a new Brixton Rec next to the current building, in Pop Brixton, then demolishing the old one to build social, affordable and private homes alongside retail and business units.

BrixtonBuzz said prior to the meeting that it would be the proposal to demolish the culturally significant Brixton Rec that would “cause the loudest laugh” in the full council meeting on Wednesday. However, these proposals are being taken seriously in this preliminary stage of planning, and the information that the lease on Pop Brixton is coming to an end in 2018 is being discussed, giving a realistic time-frame of by 2022 for concrete plans to take place.

Lambeth Conservatives have said “Brixton Recreation Centre is haemorrhaging money, is not fit for purpose, and residents deserve better”, urging council representatives to work with developers to draw up plans for the future of Brixton Rec.

At this stage, nothing is set in stone, however after Wednesday’s meeting there is serious talk about any future prospects.
