Dyslexic Starbucks employee made to feel ‘suicidal’

Meseret Kumulchew, who worked at a branch of the popular coffee shop in Clapham was left feeling ‘suicidal’ after her treatment by the company. The tribunal heard that Kumulchew’s case found Starbucks had failed to make changes for her dyslexia. She has also been victimised by her employer, who appeared to have no understanding of her disability.

Kumulchew’s dyslexia means she struggles with words and numbers, but part of her job was to record fridge temperatures which she had issues doing. Kumulchew said she wanted help from her employer but at no point did she want special treatment.

“I nearly ended my life. But I had to think of my kids.”

There will be a hearing at a later date to decide on the amount of compensation.
