Flash mob proposal in Clapham

A Clapham man proposed to girlfriend of two years accompanied by an acapella flashmob.

kattyJez Phillips, 35, took his unsuspecting girlfriend and friend for a quiet brunch in Breads Etcetera, on Clapham High Street, last Sunday (24 February).

Katty Elyassi, 32, who studied at Cardiff University was shocked to find a man posing as a waiter began serenading her after her boyfriend had excused himself from the table. Singer, Simon Pollitt, lead singer from the Buzztones, began signing the opening to the Madness song It must be love, before he was then joined by other The Buzztones posing as diners.

Phillips later said: “When Simon first came out she said she thought ‘Who is this strange man singing to me and does he know how big my boyfriend is?'”

As the song came to a close Phillips returned in black tie getting down on one knee alongside three signs that said ‘Will you marry me?’,with Ms Elyassi, who originates from Iran, replying ‘Yes’ through her tears.

It’s the first time that the acapella group, who formed in 2011, had performed for a proposal. Phillips, a property developer, who lives with his now fiancé in Clapham Common attended two rehearsal sessions which involved him proposing to one of the male singers 10 times, before the big day.

jezThe video, which has been posted on YouTube, has now had over 2,000 hits with Phillips commenting on the video “We’re both really happy!”.

The soon-to-be Mr and Mrs Phillips have not yet decided on a date or location for the upcoming nuptials but would be delighted if the Buzztones were willing to perform at the wedding, if set in the UK.
