A night porter has been branded a “hero” after he was subjected to a brutal attack during an armed robbery at a Lewisham hotel yesterday morning.

Frank Stewart, 51, confronted two burglars who gained entry through a rear window of Jury’s hotel at 3:30am.

They tied him up and began torturing him to find the safe keys, while 30 guests slept upstairs.

When Stewart pretended to not know where the keys were, they hit him on his shoulders and arms with a hammer and slashed his face and hands with a knife.

The attackers tied rags around his mouth before leaving with £15 from a fruit machine.

His wife, Maureen, 53, said he was “very brave.”

Stewart is now being treated for lacerations at Wittington Hospital, North London.

The hotel is offering a £500 reward for information that leads to the arrest of the robbers.

Detective Inspector James Dallowey is urging people to come forward with information about the attack.

Both are described as white, with local accents.

One, said to be in his early 20s, 5’ 11” tall, has a stocky build and dark short hair, the other, in his 30s, 5’ 4” tall with a thin build, long brown hair, was wearing a brown sweatshirt, jeans and trainers with a knife in a sheath attached to his belt.
