The shadow Home Secretary, Yvette Cooper, came to Brixton today to call for more police officers in Lambeth.

Cooper joined those who were campaigning opposite Brixton Tube station, asking the Mayor of London for at least 100 more police officers. Since 2010, police numbers in Lambeth have fallen an alarming 20 per cent, with other boroughs such as Hammersmith and Fulham experiencing a much lesser reduction.

Councillor Lib Peck explained: “Lambeth residents pay just as much for the police through the Mayor’s portion of the Council tax – we are entitled to get out fair share of police.”

Cooper added: “Lib Peck and her team are absolutely right to highlight the damaging impact of the Government and Mayor of London’s police cuts on people in Lambeth. It’s clear that the cuts are putting the police in an impossible position and threaten to undermine the work that the police and communities are doing to make our streets safer

Campaigners also argue the need for a reasonable amount of police officers in a borough that has high levels of crime as well as increasing levels of fear of crime.

100 more police officers would mean a big step towards making Lambeth safer. It would mean breaking the cycle of gang violence as well as robbery, and a safer environment for children and women.
