Mustapha Sait, 65, has been ordered to pay £150,000 for illegal trading under the Proceeds of Crime Act (POCA), Southwark Crown Court heard.

Southwark trading standards brought forward the case last month after the Walworth resident was previously convicted of illegal trading last year.

“We want Southwark to have a strong local economy – where legitimate business can thrive free from unfair competition – and where consumers are not deceived into buying sub-standard fake goods,” Cllr Michael Situ, Cabinet Member for Communities and Safety said.

If Sait is unable to pay his fine in 28 days he will be automatically sentenced to 12 months in prison.

Sait was first convicted of Trade Marks Offences in February 2015 after he was found with an abundance of fake designer goods in his car including, Dior, Dolce & Gabbana, Lacoste and Nike.

He was sentenced to six months imprisonment, 80 hours community work and an 18 month suspension.

“This result should serve as a warning that the council will take firm action against those who deal in illicit, fake and unsafe goods to ensure they do not benefit from their crime,” Cllr Situ added.

The fine order must be split between Southwark Council, HM Treasury and the Confiscation Unit, with the council required to reinvest the money in enforcement.
