The British Queen pub victim of the new local order

The British Queen pub in Camberwell has closed. The very popular pub with attractive original features and a horseshoe bar with a pool table at the end has been one of the latest pubs to close in Camberwell, just a few days ago.

In the past few years a lot of Camberwell’s pubs have shut down. The Prince of Wales, The Ivanhoe and The Bickleigh are just a few of the pubs that have been obliged to close. Some may speculate that their closure are linked to housing developments and demand for new properties.

The Cambria, one of the oldest pubs in London and one of the best in SE5, and The Nags Head, an old working class pub, were both feared to be shut down. Fortunately, they received the Asset of Community Value status – when a land or property of importance to a local community is subject to additional protection from development under the Localism Act 2011 – which makes it harder for developers to turn them into apartments.

Camberwell, located in the London Borough of Southwark, has seen many of its best pubs closing because of the change in its population. Indeed, lately the need for flats and houses has been overcoming the love for beer and nights out.

When the census was conducted in 2001, there were 39,920 residents estimated to be living in the Camberwell Community Council area. Ten years later, there were 40,835 residents estimated, showing how the population has increased 2.3 per cent – a considerable amount for the relatively small area.
