Vulnerable Clapham resident, 81, facing eviction

An 81-year-old vulnerable man is facing forced eviction from his Clapham home by Lambeth council.

Tony Healy has lived in Rectory Gardens, Clapham for the last 30 years. He has no family and has “completely given up hope” since receiving an eviction notice on Wednesday, according to campaigners. The main reason he is being moved is for Lambeth to sell the property along with other co-op houses in the street.

Lambeth United Housing co-op (LUHC) are fighting for Healy, arguing that the council are very aware of his vulnerable state and still going ahead with sending bailiffs to forcibly move him on Friday March 4. Lambeth United Housing are calling for an eviction resistance day on March 4.

Lambeth United Housing co-op is an organization campaigning against Lambeth council “destroying” housing co-ops that have existed in the borough for 40 years. Lambeth’s recall of “shortflife” housing means that members of these co-ops are being taken to court so that the council can gain possession of their homes – and sell them at the open market, at auction.

LUHC claim the council are putting Healy’s life in danger. He was happy within his community and never did himself or anyone else any harm.
