While Medussa club closes for good, new Effra Social celebrates it’s opening in the 50s style

Situated in the old booking office of the former East Brixton railway station, the Medussa club is now officially closed and been replaced by a photography and design studio. The club was known in the 80s for it’s legendary parties and music varying from techno to salsa.

Medussa suffered from bad reputation in the last decade due to high amount of cocaine consumption by the clubbers.

A former clubber posts:

I remember Basement Jaxx doing a few parties there – a few of which were wicked, and one of which was extremely moody. We did a party there ourselves a couple of years ago….there was pretty much a ‘freestyle’ approach to everything, including drinks prices & closing times.

The trendy Simulacrastudio is now running their business in the former piece of Brixton’s History.

A new club is instead opening today in Effra Road in Brixton, offering alternative music, as well as free dancing classes in a 50s atmosphere.

The Effra Social, owned by Artic London, which currently owns 27 pubs in London, launched the project at the end of January, closing the former Conservative Club.

Manager, Jennifer Allen, said “It is not trying to be retro, it is retro… The Effra Social will very much resonate with anyone who enjoyed a bottle of coke and a packet of Golden Wonder or Smiths crisps when out in the glam days of the fifties.’’

The night opens at 6pm and will feature DJs and live music. There will be a free swing dancing class from London’s Lindy hopping Jitterbugs Swing Land.
