An urgent meeting has been called to discuss Network Rail’s plans to refurbish Brixton’s historic railway arches, which have been home to some businesses for over 80 years.

The Federation of Small Businesses (FSB), has called a meeting with Network Rail Chief Executive Mark Carne. The meeting is intended to discuss the future of local businesses located in railway arches off Brixton high street, after concerns were raised about Network Rail’s proposed re-development.

Network Rail contacted businesses in the rail arches, notifying them that they would have to leave their properties in six months to allow for refurbishment. Around 20 small businesses will have to vacate for up to a year before returning to a revised rent, expected to be far higher than current levels.

Following meetings with local small businesses last month, FSB National Chairman John Allan said:

‘At a time of declining high streets, Brixton has become one of the most vibrant and busy in the country. This success is a result of the hard work and longstanding commitment of local businesses who have traded even through extreme challenges.

‘We question why Network Rail would not want to do everything in its power to support these successful local businesses, and the unique nature of this part of London.’

There is a groundswell of public support, with an online petition against the plan attracting almost 20,000 signatures.

Network Rail has ensured small businesses that they will receive compensation, but also a staggered rent rise of an un-specified amount.
