Camberwell locals are calling for improvements on Camberwell station road following claims locals are abusing parking rules.

They say spaces are in such demand that people are triple parking while businesses and locals are reserving spaces by putting out their own things.

One local, Harry, said: “Cars are triple parked, we can’t even walk on the pavement. As for the rule breaker, I know one local business owner who puts plenty of things outside, so the parking space is really confined now.”

Although people need to pay a parking fee to park on Camberwell station road, locals claim the situation is not getting better. According to a parking tickets database created by Proviser, a stats website, approximately 354 parking tickets per year are issued on Camberwell station road. 102 of them parked in a residents or shared use parking place without clearly displaying a permit or pay, and 48 of them parked without payment of the parking charge.

Also, some local business owners are putting their own things outside their property on the road to reserve parking spaces.

A spokesman for The Arch Company, who owns most of the properties on Camberwell station road said tenants were told not to do this. She said: “As far as I know, the company has sent staff to look at the situation going on Camberwell station road right now.”

Southwark council has announced a plan on its website to gather thoughts on Camberwell station road: “In May we worked in partnership with residents and the GLA to tender designers. We are delighted to announce that this resulted in us appointing JA Projects who have already started looking at the road. For example, they are checking what underground services are beneath the tarmac (gas mains, electricity cables, sewers) so they can see what can and cannot be done. Over the coming months, we are going to be reaching out and listening to residents, landlords and businesses again to make sure we get the designs right, considering even the smallest details.”

Southwark council has also co-designed a walking tour of Camberwell station road with Southwark Young Advisor and Sacred Heart School, aiming to let people understand what makes Camberwell station road unique and to collect different thoughts from people who attended the tour. The walking tour with Southwark Young Advisor and Sacred Heart School will begin at 12 pm to 1 pm on December 4, and the council and the appointed design team will share the designs developed so far. People can also share their own thoughts about the road with the professionals.

Southwark council has also announced on its website that they have secured funding from the Mayor of London’s Good Growth Fund to improve Camberwell station road. According to the information on its website, the improvements aim to make the road safer, to encourage more local businesses to move to the area, to provide more spaces and to improve air quality.
