Plans to transform Camberwell Yards into a Shoreditch-like Box Park have been dumped due to objections from another business – thought widely to be Morrisons.

Residents were thrilled about the new project  – to be built next to a Morrisons supermarket on Wren Road  – and believed it would benefit the community.

Despite the feedback being mostly positive from the community the project was dropped by Southwark Council due to objections from other businesses.

A letter was sent to local residents and councillors saying: “Unfortunately, our discussions with one key tenant has proven to be unsuccessful as they feel that the project will not be compatible with their operation.”

Diana, who lives next to the site, posted on the Camberwell Online blog:  “I have it on very good authority that it was Morrisons who objected”

The response from residents to this news has been varied. Binlenin on Camberwell blog said “This is great news – just look at what happened to Shoreditch”. Jackie on the same platform said: “Sad news indeed”

One of the main concerns with the project was the noise. “We have to right to a decent nights sleep to carry out our jobs,” said Diana.

The Box Park was going to include four containers dedicated to food and beverages, one container for local community use, eight containers dedicated to local businesses, one container for on-site amenity facilities and a central communal are for flexible use. Most of the community was excited.

A Camberwell resident on the Camberwell online blog page added: “I’m not sure I understand why people would be against the Box Park? Adding more businesses and reasons to come to Camberwell in an under-utilised space on a temporary basis. Sounds exciting to me”.

xxxx, councillor for Camberwell Green, told Southwark News: “It could be a space for people from all of Camberwell. It should reflect the diversity of Camberwell in terms of what on offer.”
